Fundamental develops commissioned and self-initiated projects across gastronomy, hospitality, fragrance, objects and landscape.
Every project begins with research and develops through observation, conversation and making. Rather than following a fixed methodology, we allow each place, material and collaboration to determine its own direction.
We work with brands, cultural institutions and individuals who share an appreciation for thoughtful work, long-term value and a deep connection to place.
Fundamental Eatery - WE ARE CLOSED!
Fundamental Eatery is a temporary extension and a more public interpretation of our gastronomic journey. It opens every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and features an à la carte menu and a four course Carte Blanche chef’s menu. With twenty-four seats, a fresh vibe, and innovative takes on ingredients, flavours, and experimentation, the Eatery continuously works with local suppliers, creative friends, designers, and artists to bring guests the unexpected from within our city and country’s limits.

‘The Unfinished’ Exposition
We combine gastronomy with collectable design and art that is unfinished, open, and ever-evolving, such as Het Groothandelsgebouw and its history.
We want to push food, design, and culture forward, igniting the sentiment of “The Unfinished”, an inseparable ‘fundamental’ of the design universe. Innovative designs and artworks do not emerge as finished products; they undergo trials, beautiful failures, and magical accidents that often remain unseen yet are intrinsically linked. Unfinished prototypes, concepts and materials form the backdrop of a completed design, bringing these unfinished wonders together within the dining experience of Fundamental Eatery.

AFTERMATTER
Fundamental × VACSOM
Some materials are easily dismissed. Others pass unnoticed. Yet within them lies an unexpected potential.
Aftermatter is a collaboration between Fundamental in Rotterdam and the Seoul-based art jewellery label VACSOM // Dasom Park. Both practices share a fascination with transformation and revealing beauty in what is often ignored, forgotten or taken for granted.
VACSOM elevates overlooked plastics into sculptural jewellery, organic in form and singular in presence. At Fundamental, ingredients that might otherwise remain unseen. Sea vegetables, by-products, fragments of the landscape are reimagined through careful technique and curiosity.
In Aftermatter, these two worlds meet. Material, memory and gesture come together in a quiet dialogue between jewellery and cuisine.
The collaboration unfolds across two evenings.
27 March //Diner
An intimate evening at Fundamental.
For this occasion, the tasting menu draws inspiration from the sea and nearby salt marsh landscapes. Seaweeds and coastal ingredients form the foundation of the menu, exploring the subtle flavours, textures and transformations of overlooked marine plants.
Throughout the evening, sculptural works by VACSOM will be presented in the space, creating a dialogue between jewellery, landscape and cuisine.
28 March //Launch
A more informal gathering celebrating the collaboration and the presence of VACSOM in Rotterdam. Guests are invited to discover the collection while enjoying Korean beers and the atmosphere of Overlooked Matter.
