Fundamental.
Projects

Fundamental develops commissioned and self-initiated projects across gastronomy, hospitality, fragrance, objects and landscape.

Every project begins with research and develops through observation, conversation and making. Rather than following a fixed methodology, we allow each place, material and collaboration to determine its own direction.

We work with brands, cultural institutions and individuals who share an appreciation for thoughtful work, long-term value and a deep connection to place.

FUNDAMENTAL EATERY

Rotterdam, 2025

Fundamental Eatery was a temporary, more public expression of our gastronomic practice, located in the Groothandelsgebouw in Rotterdam.

For a limited period, the space became a place for food, design and experimentation. Working with local suppliers, artists and designers, the Eatery explored how gastronomy could exist in dialogue with the city around it.

Alongside the restaurant, the space became home to exhibitions, collaborations and experiments that continue to inform the work of Fundamental today.

THE UNFINISHED

Fundamental Gallery, Rotterdam, 2025

The Unfinished brought together gastronomy, collectible design and art within Fundamental Eatery.

Taking its starting point from the unfinished character and history of the Groothandelsgebouw, the exhibition focused on the process behind making: prototypes, experiments, materials, failures and unexpected outcomes that would normally remain unseen.

Rather than presenting these as steps towards a finished work, The Unfinished brought them into the space as works in their own right, becoming part of the environment in which people ate, met and gathered.

AFTERMATTER - Art Week Rotterdam 2026

AFTERMATTER

Fundamental × VACSOM, Rotterdam, 2025

Aftermatter explored seaweed as both material and ingredient, bringing together jewellery, gastronomy and material research.

Created in collaboration with VACSOM, the project began with what remains: residual seaweed material from the production of bio based jewellery. Rather than treating this as waste, we looked at how the same material could move between disciplines and take on new forms.

VACSOM transformed seaweed into wearable objects, while Fundamental approached it through the kitchen, as flavour, texture and landscape.

The project became an exchange between two practices, using the same source material in different ways and questioning where one discipline ends and another begins.
